Backstory: Originated under Lampert's earliest project, 'My Cigar Lab,' a private-label/customization concept that allowed customers to develop personalized blends. The two strongest blends from that program were repackaged as standalone retail cigars — Don Patron first, followed by El Gringo as the second My-Cigar-Lab-derived cigar to launch under its own band. The line was later rolled into the Oro Line umbrella, which now also includes the Señorito (Half Corona), Gatsby (Torpedo), and Kingpin vitolas.
Release: El Gringo Robusto initially shipped to retailers as a regular-production cigar in boxes of 10. Packaging was refreshed in May 2023 when the cigar received an updated band and box — the underlying blend was unchanged. Now sold under the rebranded Oro Line identity.
Tobacco: All leaf is aged before rolling — 2-year aged Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, 3-year aged Ecuadorian binder, and a filler combination of 3-year Dominican plus 5-year Peruvian Pelo d'Oro. The Pelo d'Oro is a heritage Cuban-seed varietal cultivated in Peru, prized for floral sweetness and aromatic complexity.
Color: Light tan, golden Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper with a smooth, lightly veined appearance — sits firmly in the Claro / Connecticut range.
Backstory: The blend shares its leaf composition with the Don Patron Toro — both Oro Line cigars use the same wrapper, binder, and filler tobaccos from the My-Cigar-Lab program. They are marketed as distinct cigars because of their differing vitolas and band identities.
Fun Fact: Lampert Cigars is a Costa Rican boutique with its factory Tabacos de Costa Rica located in the mountains of Santiago De Puriscal — one of the few remaining premium-cigar producers operating out of Costa Rica rather than Nicaragua, Honduras, or the Dominican Republic.
Fun Fact: 'El Gringo' is a colloquial nod to the cigar's North-American-leaning blend and approachable profile, contrasting it with the heritage-focused Don Patron counterpart in the same series.
MSRP varies slightly across retailers: early shipping reports list $13.00/stick, while current retailer listings (post-2023 rebranding) commonly show $15.00/stick. Used the more recent figure.
Strength is reported between mild-medium and medium depending on source — flavor profile (white tea, cashew, creamy leather, toasted bread, cedar, vanilla finish) supports a Mild-Medium classification, with complexity that rewards experienced palates without overwhelming newer smokers.
