Backstory: The Línea Montecristo Open was introduced in 2009 as a mellower, more approachable take on the Montecristo blend — pitched at younger smokers and aficionados who wanted to enjoy a Habano outdoors. The four launch vitolas — Eagle, Master, Regata, Junior — were named after open-air pursuits (mountaineering, golf, sailing, motoring). Regata takes its cue from sailing regattas.
Backstory: The Montecristo brand itself traces to 1935 at the H.Upmann factory in Havana, where a lector (factory reader) read Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo aloud to the torcedores. The novel's popularity on the rolling floor led founders Alonso Menéndez and José Manuel García to christen their new brand after the protagonist.
Release: Regular production vitola in the Línea Montecristo Open line since 2009. Sold in 20-count Semi Boite Nature boxes and 3-pack aluminum tubos.
Tobacco: Filler and binder leaves selected from the Vuelta Abajo growing region in Pinar del Río, Cuba — the heart of Cuban Habano tobacco. Wrapper is Cuban-grown, graded EMS (English Market Selection).
Color: Light milk-chocolate brown wrapper with minimal visible veining and a fine, even sheen.
Fun Fact: Each cigar carries the standard Montecristo band with a green secondary band beneath it — the green band features two gold stripes and the gold Open wordmark, making the Open vitolas instantly recognizable in the humidor.
Fun Fact: The factory vitola (vitola de galera) for the Regata is Forum — a relatively rare Cuban factory size at 135 mm × 46 ring gauge in a petit pyramid figurado shape. It is the only Cuban Habano produced in this exact vitola.
